  RECORD-KEEPING WITHOUT WRITING

ndean civilizations did not develop writing systems. Extensive records were maintained instead on quipu. The quipu was a length of cord held horizontally from which hung a variety of colored yarns on which were entered different kinds of knots of colored yarn. Quipu knots recorded census figures, tax data, and imperial history.
